On Tuesday, June 18, the two winners of the 47th annual Freedom in America essay and poster contest presented their work at the Depew School Board Meeting to commemorate the hard work everyone put into their submissions. The Freedom in America contest focuses on attention to academic achievement, civics and protective values in the student body. Seventh and eighth grade students worked on posters and essays for the contest during the school year, and ten finalists were determined in April.

“Topics ranged from national holidays, immigration, individual freedom, personal stories of freedom and everything in between,” Salvatore Carlino, Depew Middle School Social Studies Teacher said.

The High School Art Department judged the five poster finalists and chose Stacee Bryan as the winner. Her poster features a drawing of the Statue of Liberty in front of a waving American flag and a message that reads “We have the freedom to change the world.”

Of the five essay finalists, eighth grader Jessica Palmisano’s essay was chosen as the winner. Her essay discusses the lack of women’s rights in Yemen, Iraq and Saudi Arabia compared to the privileges in America, as well as the continuing struggle for equality everywhere.

“It is a privilege to experience the freedom in this country that others do not,” Palmisano wrote in her winning essay. “Amerian is truly an amazing place where it is possible to pursue our dreams and explore opportunities for a better life.”

In other business, the Comprehensive District Education Plan was presented to the school board on June 18, which was created by a committee of volunteer teachers, administrators and staff who create annual goals to match the district’s vision. The goals covered the past school year and the upcoming one.

The three district goals listed in the presentation are as follows: “To inspire and prepare students to be confident, competent, caring and contributing individuals who can meet and overcome life’s challenges. To transform learning through an innovative K-12 educational environment that prepares our students for a rapidly changing world. To provide a safe and inviting school culture by fostering positive relationships among students, parents, staff, and the community.”

The presentation highlighted various events, opportunities and initiatives the district used to meet these goals. These ranged from an informational program that exposed students to career paths to a STEAM night that showcased classroom technology. Overall, Depew School District is constantly attempting to promote leadership, kindness and well-being for their students.
