Green, White and Red Theme on The Hill

Published in The Hill Visitor’s Guide & Business Directory 2026

By Abby Wojcik

The painted crosswalks of course correspond to the colors of the Italian flag, paying homage to The Hill’s Italian heritage, but they also serve as a pedestrian safety measure. The eye-catching, colorful crossings were added in 2022 as part of ongoing city efforts to slow down traffic and improve safety for community residents and visitors. Sixteen crosswalks were painted to match the fire hydrants, which were first decorated in the 1970s. Red, white and green details can be found throughout The Hill, from mailboxes and garden gnomes to front porch flags and flower pots.
